crowds on National Day, Shanghai |
Looking down the pedestrian portion of Nanjing (East) Road,
a successful pedestrian shopping area, despite its faded
luster. This stretch of road was once the premier shopping
road of Asia and even kept some of its prestige during the
Mao era. Today it is best known for one of the densist collections
of neon signs and giant Sony "jumbotrons" to be
found anywhere. But the shops can't compete with big new
Japanese and French department stores along Huaihai (Zhong)
Lu, another "center" of Shanghai south of here.
